Essay
How do you view the world differently after having taken History 12?
Oliver Ollenberger
Over the course of my grade 12 year, no subject has changed my perspective on the world more than History 12. I have gained a new sense of appreciation for the interconnectedness of the world's events, and even more so how they affect one another from behind the scenes. One event in particular that I had no appreciation for initially is The Treaty of Versailles, the agreement that provided Europe a hostile political foundation that would incubate all the conflicts that would transpire across European land throughout the 20th century. Before the exhaustive study of this famous treaty, I merely saw the monumental historical events of the 20th century as erratic and unconnected from one another. Now, through History 12, I not only have learned about these historical events and their outcomes, but how they influence one another in the grand timeline of humanity. For instance, through our exhaustive study of the rise of Adolf Hitler, I now understand the highly volatile and unorthodox methods employed by both Hitler and the Nazi party to allow for the infamous Fuhrer’s extremist beliefs to overtake an entire country in swell of national pride. Perhaps most importantly, this course has allowed me to form my own opinions in response to the actions of past world leaders or influential groups, as I now have the necessary background information to form an educated opinion on such pivotal events in the world's history, such as the current complicated conflict sweeping across the middle-east.
Admittedly, I joined History 12 with nearly zero fundamental knowledge of even the huge-scale events of our races history, and hoped that at the very best I would learn some events and dates that would make me sound smart at social gatherings. Instead, I believe that I am walking away from high school with a new appreciation and critical point of view for the events that have shaped the world we live in today. Now that I see the true interconnectedness of the world’s history, it astounds me that any person could live out their lives blind to it. Through the studying of influential figures who left their mark on the world’s history, I have come to hold a deeper respect for political and societal policies I once dismissed immediately as either extreme or backwards, as the mortality of the world's nations is never black and white.
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time studying history at my time at Shawnigan, as I found it both insightful and eye opening. The unbiased atmosphere of the classroom lectures allowed me to cultivate not only my knowledge of the world’s history, but my own perspective and opinion of the events that transpired in the past. Though I may struggle with the specific dates of events, I am confident going into the next part of my academic career in my chronological understanding of the events that shaped the world in the 20th century to present. Going forward into university, I would like to further explore the world’s complex history through studying the years prior to 1900, as our course only scratched the surface of humanity's time on earth.
